Howto fix watchdog timeout in FreeBSD 7.x

November 12th, 2010 at 16:41

During the shutdown of a Virtual Machine with FreeBSD 7.3 installed on I ran into the error “30 second watchdog timeout expired”. At this machine there are several jails installed and due to this error they didn’t shutdown properly.
30 seconds watchdog timeout expired

The cause is a default timeout of 30 seconds as defined in /etc/defaults/rc.conf. It seems to me a very short time.

How to set the watchdog timeout

You can set the time-out by adding the following line to your /etc/rc.conf:

rcshutdown_timeout=”300″

In this case the time-out is set to 300 seconds. That worked fine for my application.
